Prizes and Praises

Summer is a very important time for all Russian film makers. Just after Kinotavr is over another important film festival starts.

The Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF) is the second oldest festival in the world, after the Venice Film Festival. It was first held in Moscow in 1935. The festival's top prize is the statue of Saint George slaying the dragon, as represented on the Coat of Arms of Moscow.

Federico Fellini‘s 81/2 was the most famous film to premiere at the MIFF and win the top prize. Nikita Mikhalkov has been the festival's president since 2000. Since then all the celebrities who come to visit Moscow during the festival also visit his cottage and definitely learn more about the real Russian mentality.

The festival introduced The Stanislavsky Award recently to be presented to outstanding actors visiting the festival, such as Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep. This time Takeshi Kitano is going to be the special guest of the festival and, of course, the special award for achievements in cinema industry will be given to him.

The 30th Moscow Film Festival presents more than 30 movies including Russian, German and French works. 16 movies are included the the competition's program.

Iron Man

Iron Man is based on a comic story and this fact somehow managed not to spoil the movie. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is a billionaire industrialist who makes and sells weapons. When he comes back home after being kidnapped he realizes war is bad and weapons can kill people (!). He also realizes Gwyneth Paltrow is a woman.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal SKull

Though this movie is total adventure, and the genre is quite specific and predictable, Indiana Jones won't bore you. This time what you see lives up to the expectations you may have going in.

First, Cate Blanchett plays a Ukrainian communist named Irina Spalko - and this is definitely worth seeing. Second, Harrison Ford is charming and funny. Third, Steven Spielberg directed.

The latest Indiana Jones adventure begins in the desert Southwest in the 1950s - during the Cold War - when Indy barely escapes from Soviet agents on a remote airfield.

Then professor Jones returns home to Marshall College - only to find things have gone from bad to worse. His close friend and dean of the college (Jim Broadbent) explains that Indy's recent activities have made him the object of suspicion, and that the government has put pressure on the university to fire him. On his way out of town, Indiana meets rebellious young Mutt (Shia LaBeouf), who carries both a grudge and a proposition for the adventurous archaeologist: If he'll help Mutt on a mission with deeply personal stakes, Indy could very well make one of the most spectacular archaeological finds in history - the Crystal Skull of Akator, a legendary object of fascination and fear.

And of course the Soviet agents are also hot on the trail of the Crystal Skull.
