Relive the spell-binding synchronization of the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony with a performance by Red Poppy Ladies’ Percussion. The Chinese drumming group’s 12 members take the stage in traditional costume to play on more than 40 percussion instruments. The women’s repertoire mixes traditional and contemporary influences from both Eastern and Western music, pairing fast beats with dramatic lighting and elements of dance.

Since the group’s founding in Beijing in 2000, its rotating cast of members has performed in more than 50 countries. In 2008, they participated in the Beijing Olympics’ opening and closing ceremonies.

The pretty Red Poppy drummers, most of whom are in their early 20s, may look like delicate flowers. But they have serious technical chops: one piece, “Rolling Walnuts,” requires them to beat drums at a rate of more than 10 times per second. For their stop in Moscow, the Poppies have devised several new Russian-themed numbers.
