Construction begins for Russia’s highest hotel

by Nathan Toohey at 19/09/2012 18:26

At 4,000 meters above sea level, Russia’s highest hotel is to open its doors by summer 2013, RIA Novosti reported on Wednesday. Construction has already begun on the slopes of Europe’s highest mountain, Mount Elbrus in the Russian republic of Kabardino-Balkaria. The project is being carried out by Vneshekonombank’s Northern Caucasus Development Corporation.
"The hotel, designed for 48 people, should be the last camp site for climbers to acclimatize before summiting," said Anton Pak, head of the Northern Caucasus Development Corporation.
The hotel part of the Northern Caucasian Mountain Club project, which foresees, along with the construction of high-altitude mountain hotels, the development of a unified travel logistics infrastructure and the creation of standardized travel routes in all regions, as well as the creation of a single Internet portal.
The cost of the first phase of the project, which includes the construction of the hotel, is 200 million rubles, but a subsequent project is expected to see investments of about 1 billion rubles.
The previous high-altitude record holder – Priyut Odinnadtsati hotel – burned down in 1998 due to fire safety violations by foreign tourists. It was situated at a height of 4,100 meters.

Caucasus’ largest exhibition center construction set to begin

The Northern Caucasus Development Corporation has also completed design work for a 2.5-billion-ruble multifunctional complex to be located in the outskirts of the northern Caucasus town of Mineralniye Vody. Construction is to begin in October and be completed in the first quarter of 2014, Pak told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.
"The design is finished, everything is almost all agreed, in autumn we will receive a building permit, and in October work will have already begun," said Pak.
The Northern Caucasus Development Corporation was established in 2010 to attract investment to the region. According to the official website of the company, its objectives for 2011-15 are to assist in the implementation of at least 120 investment projects, involving at least 70 billion rubles from private investors.
