God Bless America

by Vladimir Kozlov at 31/05/2012 20:37

This movie by Bobcat Goldthwait, an American comedian-turned-director, may be reminiscent of Oliver Stone’s “Natural Born Killers” from 1994, being a bloody satire filled with black humor.

It centers on Frank (Joel Murray), a divorced, recently fired insurance salesman, who, to top it all off, may also be terminally ill. In addition, he is sick and tired of how America has become a state of idiocracy, based on pop culture and Internet influences. He is ready to commit suicide, but changes his mind watching a reality show in which a girl throws a fit when her parents get her the wrong expensive car for her birthday. He goes on a bloody crusade against cruel, stupid and intolerant people.

Predictably, the girl becomes his first victim. The next day, Frank shoots her in her car. Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr), a 16-year-old high school student, accidentally witnesses the killing and becomes Frank’s unlikely accomplice, sharing his belief that stupid people have to be exterminated. Together, they travel across America, killing whoever they judge should die.

The movie premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Critics’ opinions about “God Bless America” diverged.

“This funny, sick twist of social satire is certainly locked and loaded, even if its aim is sometimes off,” wrote a reviewer for The Los Angeles Times, adding that “God Bless America” tries “to be a sharp film, but misfires.”

“The real problem is there’s just not enough plot on which to hang the message that mean people suck,” opined a reviewer for The New York Post.
