The launch of two ballistic objects detected by Russia’s Defense Ministry on Tuesday were reportedly part of a joint exercise between Israel and the United States to test the Israeli anti-missile defense system.

“The launches we’re talking about were a test of the Anchor target missile that is used for testing our missile defense system,” an Israeli Defense Ministry representative told RIA Novosti.

“The missiles were launched from the Mediterranean Sea and were successfully detected by a radar on Israeli territory.”

Earlier, a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said a launch was detected at 10:16 Moscow time (06:16 GMT) by a radar in the southern Russian city of Armavir. The targets’ trajectories ran from the central to the eastern Mediterranean, the spokesman said.

The objects reportedly fell in the sea, according to sources in Damascus.

Earlier, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu informed President Vladimir Putin that two ballistic missiles were launched in the Mediterranean Sea with a trajectory set for the eastern seaboard.
