Cold weather gets a grip on Moscow

by at 18/12/2012 17:16

Moscow will remain in the grips of frost until the end of the week.

The cold weather that set in on December 15 is 7-10 degrees lower than the norm, and should it stay until the weekend, it would be the coldest stretch in December in 50 years, Meteonovosti reported.

Since the start of the century, such low temperatures in December have been registered twice – in 2002 and in 2009.

Meteorologists predict that the cold will let up only at the start of next week. Until then, the warmest weather Muscovites can hope for is minus-12 degrees Celsius during the day, with the minimum reaching minus-20 to minus-22 degrees at night.

Muscovites, however, should consider themselves lucky, as temperatures in some areas of Siberia have hit minus-50, paralyzing local transportation and forcing school cancellations.

The cold snap has killed 29 Russians since it started. In the 24 hours up to Tuesday afternoon, six people died in the Chelyabinsk region, two in the Krasnoyarsk region, and one in Moscow, a source in the Health Ministry told RIA Novosti.

Overall in Russia, 322 people have been injured in the cold and 175 have had to be treated in hospitals since Dec. 15.
