Senior Ingush Judge Killed in North Caucasus

MOSCOW (RIA Novosti) - A senior judge in the North Caucasus Republic of Ingushetia has been killed in an attack by unidentified assailants, the republic's investigative committee said on Sunday.

Khasan Yandiyev was deputy chairman of Ingushetia's Supreme Court and was killed at a filling station in the city of Karabulak at around 12:45 p.m. Moscow time on Sunday, the committee said. Measures are under way to find the attackers.

Chechen Ex-Mafia Boss Abducted in Moscow

MOSCOW (RIA Novosti) - Former Chechen criminal group leader Movladi Atlangeriyev has been kidnapped in Moscow, Kommersant business daily reported on Monday.

Atlangeriyev, 54, disappeared on January 31 near a restaurant in central Moscow. Two armed men seized him and forced him into their car. In early February, Moscow prosecutors opened a criminal case into the kidnapping, the paper said.

No ransom demands have been received since the attack. In recent years, Atlangeriyev had cooperated with Russian law enforcement authorities. The kidnapping could be linked with the investigation into the 2006 murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya. One of the suspects into her violent death is Khozh-Akhmed Nukhayev, a member of a criminal gang founded by Atlangeriyev.

Kidnapped Man Calls Police From Car Trunk

NOVOSIBIRSK (RIA Novosti) - Police in Tomsk, West Siberia, stopped a taxi containing a man who had been kidnapped after the "passenger" had called them from the trunk of the vehicle, a police spokesman said on Thursday.

The man later said that kidnappers had beaten him, taken his money and one mobile phone, but had failed to notice the second, and this had saved his life.

He subsequently called the police, described the car and where it was heading. He had suffered serious injuries during the attack and was taken to hospital. The driver of the car and his three passengers were detained. 

Russian Businessman Beaten to Death in Moscow Region

MOSCOW (RIA Novosti) - A Russian businessman has died in hospital, after he was viscously beaten by masked attackers on Saturday, a police source said Monday.

Valery Ostapets, the president of Russia's Union of Juice Producers, was attacked while walking his dog in the town of Krekshino some 24 km (15 miles) west of Moscow.

"The attackers began beating the entrepreneur with baseball bats," the source said. "On hearing the screams, his wife ran outside and the assailants fled." Police have launched an investigation into the murder.
