Medvedev boosts badminton

by at 24/10/2011 18:18

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called for Russians to share his love of badminton in a video published on his official blog.

And since “only few people can play for real,” the president hopes that “training at schools, universities and all places where it’s possible to organize it” will improve the situation in Russia.

To inspire his compatriots to get on court, Medvedev demonstrated his skills in a short game with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

“I hope that, having watched this film, you will feel an increased desire to play badminton, and we will have more success in this wonderful game,” the president said.

Tandem badminton

The video showed the Russian ruling tandem playing against each other – that is until Putin called it quits.

“Those who play badminton well, make decisions quickly,” the sport-kit-clad president said, holding a racket before the friendly match.

“This game develops your physical form, hand-eye coordination, accuracy and reactions,” he also said in the three minute long video. Medvedev added that the first man in space, Yury Gagarin, was also a keen badminton player.

Rowing down the river

In 2010, Medvedev went kayaking with Yevgeny Arkhipov, the head of the Russian canoeing and rowing federation, and Vladimir and Yury Lizunov, who did rowing with the president in his youth and now hold senior positions in the federation, Vesti 24 reported at the time. And in February, 2011, Medvedev skied at the Krasnaya Poyana resort together with Putin.

However, the two have never posed on a tandem bike, although Putin said he would try it with Medvedev at the youth forum Seliger this summer, RIA Novosti reported.

Manly sports

The PM himself tends to like individual sports, with a clear preference for manly varieties. He has not just spoken of his love to judo, but also appeared several times in front of the cameras wearing his judogi and became a co-author of a “Learn Judo with Putin” text-book published in 2008. And a special video that goes together with the book, features the PM demonstrating his best techniques.
