Russia is seeing a spike in the rate of measles infections, RIA Novosti reported on Friday, citing data from health authorities. “In 2010, Moscow saw 16 cases of measles, last year – 139 cases, and this year – 80 confirmed cases, and a further 40 cases are awaiting confirmation.,” RIA Novosti quoted Nikolai Filatov, Moscow’s head sanitary doctor, as saying on Friday. Russia saw a total of 631 cases in 2011 according to Russian Agency for Health and Consumer Rights data. RIA Novosti cited specialists as saying that much of the infection was being brought in from Western Europe, where 130,000 cases were registered in 2011.
