Lacrosse - the new frontline of Russian rivalry

by at 10/11/2010 18:00

The clash of the capitals is heading on to the lacrosse field for the first time as Moscow gets ready to host St. Petersburg on Sunday.

Although quite big in some parts of North America, lacrosse has not really made it across the Bering Strait in a big way, but Moscow-based expat David Diamonon has carefully nurtured a team in the city.

And his largely Russian squad of game amateurs has become a regular – if slightly unlikely – sight at the outdoor hockey box at 24 Bolshoi Fakelny Pereulok, near Marksistskaya/Taganskaya metro.

“We’ve been trying to get the sport more visible with sessions at the weekends regardless of the weather,” Diamonon told The Moscow News.

“Every time we get together someone stops to ask us what’s going on. People are interested in what the sport is, where it comes from and how to play.”

But sport thrives on rivalry, and few cities share a dispute as intense as the Russian capital and its northern rival St. Petersburg.

So, come Sunday, the Moscow lacrosse lovers will take to the field in their first serious match against the city of Peter the Great.

“At long last the throwdown has come together and the bragging rights for Russian lacrosse will be settled on Sunday,” Diamonon said.

Spectators are welcome to the softball fields as the Moscow squad aims to make the most of its home advantage for the grudge match.

New recruits

All the game also marks the end of the outdoor season, the action is set to move indoors during the winter months.

And new players are always welcome to have a go at a sport which was developed by Native Americans and resembles a form of field hockey – played largely at head height with a ball flung from basket to basket as players head for goal.

Enthusiasm is more important than experience. For more details, contact Diamonon at ddiamonon@yahoo.com.
