UEFA not to allow Rubin to play Chelsea in Kazan

by R-Sport at 25/03/2013 16:58

UEFA will not allow Rubin to play Chelsea in their home city of Kazan in the Europa League quarterfinals, European football's governing body told R-Sport on Monday.

Rubin had said they would appeal the decision to force the club to hold the April 11 game at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow because of a churned-up pitch in Kazan.

But UEFA told R-Sport on Monday that the decision was "final."

Earlier Monday, Rubin's stadium director Pavel Nikulin insisted the club would do "everything possible and impossible" to ensure that the second leg could be held in Kazan.

The pitch at the city's Central Stadium has been replanted with more than six kilos of grass seed and passed fit by the Russian Premier League for the club's next domestic league fixture against Lokomotiv Moscow on Saturday, Nikulin said.

Rubin had to play their first two Europa League matches of the year at Luzhniki after holding all group games last year in Kazan.

The first leg of the quarterfinal tie on April 4 is at Stamford Bridge.

UEFA has angered Russian clubs before, with the organization forbidding Anzhi Makhachkala from playing their home games anywhere in the restive North Caucasus region out of safety concerns.
