Sochi 2014 more creative than London Olympics - organizer

by R-Sport at 04/07/2013 10:57

Sochi 2014 chief Dmitry Chernyshenko says next year's Winter Olympics are to be more creative than the London Games of last summer.

Speaking to R-Sport on the sixth anniversary of the International Olympic Committee's vote to stage a first-ever Winter Games in Russia, Chernyshenko promised an event to remember come the February 7 opening ceremony in the Black Sea resort.

"London managed to make the 2012 Games some of the most memorable in history," Chernyshenko said. "And practice shows: Every successive Games are more creative and more dramatic than the last."

"Sochi will be no exception. We are obviously utilizing the experience and the best practices of our British colleagues, and in 2014 we'll do all we can to leave behind an unprecedented legacy, for ourselves first of all," Chernyshenko said.

He would not explain how the Games would surprise the world, in keeping with organizers' traditional tactics of keeping their cards close to their chests.

Russia undertook the Herculean task of building everything needed for the Olympics in less than seven years; a project estimated to cost in excess of $50 billion - making Sochi 2014 the most expensive Games ever, summer or winter.

With 218 days to go, all of the venues in the seaside and mountain clusters are ready, though the race is on to add all of the finishing touches to the surrounding infrastructure.

Sochi won the right to host the Games at an IOC session in Guatemala City on July 4, 2007, beating strong competition from more traditional winter sports destinations Salzburg, Austria and Pyeongchang, South Korea.
