Boxing: Povetkin fires manager Hrunov

by R-Sport at 09/07/2013 15:15

Wladimir Klitschko's next opponent Alexander Povetkin has fired his manager Vlad Hrunov, the Russian heavyweight boxing champion announced Tuesday.

Hrunov is a prominent figure in Russian boxing circles and has worked with Povetkin since he turned professional after winning the gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

No reason for the split was given.

"I announce that up until recently all relations between me and my manager Vladimir Hrunov are terminated," Povetkin said on his official YouTube channel on Tuesday.

Klitschko, who holds four world titles, will take on WBA regular champion Povetkin on October 5 in Moscow in a bout that has been postponed or canceled several times.

Hrunov, meanwhile, manages most of the country’s top fighters but split with Denis Lebedev last month after Levedev lost his WBA cruiserweight title to Panama’s Guillermo Jones in May.

No reason has been given for that separation either, but some boxing commentators have speculated that Lebedev was pressured to fight on against Jones despite facial injuries, which Hrunov has said kept Lebedev in hospital for a week.

The announcement of Povetkin's divorce from Hrunov comes just two days after the specialist website boxingscene.com reported that talks between Povetkin and star trainer Freddie Roach over where he will train for the Klitschko bout collapsed.

The talks fell apart because Roach demanded Povetkin come to Los Angeles for training rather than working in Russia, the site reported.

Povetkin, who is unbeaten in 26 fights, has previously been training with ex-champion Kostya Tszyu.
