Zhukov to bear Sochi Olympic Torch in Moscow

by R-Sport at 01/10/2013 15:53

Russian Olympic Committee president Alexander Zhukov is among the torchbearers for the first stage of the Sochi 2014 torch relay in Moscow next week.

About 300 of the total 14,000 torchbearers are to carry the Olympic flame through the streets of the Russian capital starting on Red Square on October 7.

The flame was lit from the sun's rays Sunday at a traditional ceremony in Ancient Olympia, Greece, where Russian hockey star Alexander Ovechkin was the second torchbearer after Greek skier Ioannis Antoniou.

From there it is touring 33 Greek towns and cities before being transported to Moscow on October 5.

Zhukov, who was elected to the International Olympic Committee last month, will be among the first group of torchbearers to accompany the flame along its record-breaking 65,000-kilometer journey.

Other figures include hockey legend Vyacheslav Fetisov and other Olympic champions like figure skater Irina Rodnina, gymnast Svetlana Khorkina and synchronized swimmer Anastasia Davydova.

After the Moscow stage, the flame will travel to St. Petersburg and further north before heading east and looping around the Kamchatka Peninsula, down to Vladivostok and back across southern Siberia via Lake Baikal, the world’s largest freshwater lake.

On its way through more than 2,900 towns in Russia’s 83 regions, the torch will make its way back into European Russia, eventually winding down to the Black Sea resort of Sochi for the Opening Ceremony on February 7, 2014.

The cauldron is to be lit by a torch that will be taken into space.
