Roy Jones Jr. to fight in Moscow Dec. 21 – promoter

by R-Sport at 21/11/2013 13:44

Former multi-division boxing world champion Roy Jones Jr. is to fight in Moscow next month, the organizer of the event Vlad Hrunov told R-Sport on Thursday.

The 44-year-old was slated to fight Canada's Bobby Gunn in Philadelphia next month, but the bout was called off and the American decided to come to Russia instead.

“Roy Jones should have boxed on December 4, but his bout was cancelled and he turned to us with an offer to take part in our boxing night,” Hrunov said. “Jones intends to choose his opponent soon, but it won’t be a Russian boxer.”

The promoter added Jones is picking from the list of five or six candidates from Europe and the US for the December 21 bout.

Jones, the first former middleweight champion to win a heavyweight title, has already fought in the Russian capital, knocked out by WBA cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev in the 10th round back in 2011.

Jones, on a 56-8 record, last fought in June 2012, beating Poland’s Pawel Glazewski by split decision after being sent to the floor in the sixth round.

The Moscow boxing night will take place at the same Krylatskoe Sport Palace. The undercard will also feature bouts involving Russian middleweight Dmitry Chudinov and lightweight Eduard Troyanovsky, both still unbeaten.
