Weather 'optimal' for Sochi Olympic alpine skiing - official

Conditions on the Olympic ski slopes above Sochi are "optimal" after days of strong snowfall, a leading Russian sports official said Monday.

In the run-up to the February 7-23 Olympics, it had been feared that the Krasnaya Polyana mountain venues could lack snow, a problem which caused some test events to be abandoned last year.

"A large amount of snow has fallen in Krasnaya Polyana in the last few days," said Russian Olympic Committee head Alexander Zhukov, a career politician and high-profile organizer of the Sochi Games.

"Many people worried that there wouldn't be much snow, but now snow is falling every day ... I hope that if there is the same weather as there has been for the last few days; chilly, sunny, with snow falling in the mountains, that will be optimal for the Olympics."

Far from being forced to access the nearly half a million cubic meters of snow kept in reserve under blankets, workers are actually out in force to remove excess snow from the Olympic pistes, Zhukov added.
